FAQ

Why did you cancel KS and join Formlabs?

We want to build an impactful product faster, so you can call it impatience. Joining Formlabs gives us the best and fastest opportunity to make SLS 3D printing more affordable and easier to use. Working on the Micron and opening a direct line to 3D printing enthusiasts via our Kickstarter showed us how many people are excited about more accessible SLS 3D printing, and after talking to Max and learning about the SLS program at Formlabs, it became obvious that only by joining forces could we accelerate our mission to bring industrial-power SLS to a much broader audience.

We want to spend as much time as possible finding solutions to big, ambiguous problems, but in reality only a small portion of my time is spent on this, while the vast majority is spent packing boxes, responding to comments, and other things that prevent usme from focusing on the most interesting problems.

Will you continue to build Micronics?

No. Instead of focusing on Micronics the company and Micron the product, we will be joining Formlabs to bring the next generation of accessible SLS printers to market. In spirit, this will look very similar to the work we’ve done as Micronics, but now with infinitely more leverage and resources. We don’t yet know exactly what type of product this work will lead to, but we do know that it will be focused on making SLS technology much more affordable and easy to use.

What will happen with all the backers?

We are so grateful to the Micronics backers, and we are excited to have this community’s support as we join forces with Formlabs. All of the backers will have their pledges refunded immediately. Additionally, we will be giving every backer a $1,000 credit to Formlabs to use on any current or future product as well as a free Open Materials License for Formlabs printers. Is Formlabs crushing its small competitor?

Formlabs and Micronics share a mission — to make powerful 3D printing tools much more accessible. Instead of ending the Micronics mission, this new setup actually accelerates it — allowing us to work with the Formlabs team to very quickly bring the most accessible SLS printer the world has ever seen to market.

Is Formlabs coming out with a low-cost SLS printer?

Micronics’ and Formlabs’ missions are incredibly closely aligned, and while we can’t comment on the details of Formlabs’ development roadmap, we are excited to work with them on making SLS printing even more accessible, which means developing SLS printers that are both more affordable and easier to use.
